We shall give a general introduction to the field of inverse boundary problems for elliptic partial differential operators and discuss some recent progress and challenges in the analysis of such problems. In particular, we shall explain how the techniques of Carleman estimates, originally developed in the study of unique continuation properties of partial differential equations, become crucial in this new environment.
