A recent result of Biringer, Johnson, and Minsky shows (roughly) that some power of a pseudo-Anosov automorphism extends over a compression body if and only if the stable/unstable laminations are the limit of meridians in some compression body. Their proof uses relatively recent ideas, including hyperbolic geometry and the curve complex. I'll present a different strategy for proving their result, which instead uses more classical ideas introduced by Casson and Long.
